This suburban Burlington backyard houses an active young family who loves to entertain and relax with the little time they have at home between work and hockey practices. The backyard was small and lacked any sort of feature besides the small deck and patio the builder supplied.
The client had a general idea of what they wanted, however they couldn’t envision how to lay it out in their space. Access was minimal and most of the work had to be done by hand, which added another level of difficulty to the design. Having a seamless flow between the various areas from inside to outside was a key condition for entertaining.
The design incorporates a composite lumber deck with a lower landing for hot tub access and a covered area directly off of the dining area. Privacy was needed from neighboring yards and was achieved using a lightweight stone wall and cedar screens. No matter the weather, the family enjoys time together watching the game under the timber frame roof.
A grill island with soapstone counters and bar completes the family room area. The deck is finished with a frameless glass railing to allow a view of the ravine directly behind the property. The lower patio area boasts a hot tub and custom steel and soapstone bar which we had fabricated. Lighting and planting finish the project and provide around the clock ambience. All of the clients’ requests were met and surpassed, as this project successfully brought the “Inside Out”.
