This wide open space, relatively untouched, would seem to be a slam dunk, easy design. However, after the initial consultation, the number of elements requested would cause quite the design challenge: 2 structures, a pool, a built-in BBQ all had to be laid out in the most efficient way to accommodate client, neighbours and township.

All machinery and materials had to go through an 8’ opening for access, over a narrow front lawn on the bend in a crescent, requiring permission from the neighbour to use their property. Organizing and timing of large quantities of materials and equipment stored on the road was crucial in the success of this project.

Before construction began a grading certificate from the builder was needed, a variance process with the township was completed to allow the cabana and the pavilion, permits were obtained for the wood burning fireplace, plumbing to the cabana washroom and the pool.

Before the pool was installed, retaining walls and trees needed to be placed as there would be no access after the pool was in. The pool had to be in a separate area for safety, as requested by the client, but the fence was not to be intrusive in the flow of the space. A fully functioning bathroom was a must as well. The pavilion had to be fully screened so no bugs could bother the family during use, a TV and ceiling fan had to be installed for outdoor entertainment/comfort and the fire place had to be wood burning for the natural atmosphere….very specific client.

In addition to design challenges, all features culminated in an award winning outdoor space. Fence/gates were adjusted and installed to satisfy code restrictions. Natural stone pool coping and BBQ station complement tumbled pavers of different colour and textures. Fir posts and beams make the pavilion stand out against the clean look of cedar on the cabana, screens and renovated deck. Appropriate tree and plant selection ensure the environment will blend with the natural backdrop and be a low maintenance space. New lawn and vegetable garden were the last requirements in the backyard. New front steps, a widened driveway and veneered porch in the front were completed to finish the landscape to be enjoyed for years to come.
